IN A major setback to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE), Selvarasa Pathmanathan who was recently named chief of the terror group, is believed to have been detained in Thailand. Sri Lankan officials said that Pathmanathan popularly known as KP, was arrested following two Interpol warrants issued against him. The new LTTE chief has been residing and operating from Thailand for many years. KP assumed leadership of the organisation after the death of LTTE supremo Velupillai Pirabhakaran.

Sri Lankan authorities have not made it clear under what circumstances KP was arrested. He has been accused of running arms and ammunition and arranging logistics for the LTTE. He is also wanted in connection with the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. Despite his violent past, Pathmanathan had recently said that the Tamil Tigers would give up arms and would use non-violent methods to attain their goal of a separate state.

Tamil rebels have preferred to remain silent over the arrest of their new leader and have not made any comments in this connection.
