Dr M Karunanidhi passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. People used to call the 94-year-old Karunanidhi as Kalanginar. He was also known as the Chanakya of Indian politics. He had a very good family life beyond politics.

This master of south India's politics with his unthinkable political strategy wooed each and every Indian. He was also many times responsible for govt formation at the Centre. Indeed, a true star of national politics.

The head of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and five times Chief Minister, married thrice in addition to his numerous love affairs. He had a very interesting family life which was full of happiness and prosperity.

When he breathed his last at the Kaveri Hospital, his two wives and children were by his side.

Because of his charismatic image, his party, the DMK not only came to power, but Karunanidhi himself became Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for five terms. He was a 13-time legislator never lost a single election in his life till his death at 94 years of age.

Karunanidhi's personal life is no less interesting. His three wives are – Padmavati, Dayalu Ammal and Rajati Ammal. While Padmavati had passed away earlier, Dayalu Amma and Rajati were living with him until his last breath. Karunanidhi had met his first wife Padmavati Ammiyar in 1944 and fallen in love. She was the sister of playback singer CS Jayaraman of south Cinema.

Then Karunanidhi met Rajati, his third wife, who was a member of the dance club of Kannadasan during the 60's election campaign. Karunanidhi got attracted towards Rajati and they started seeing each other. Soon these meeting turned into love. Rajati was barely 20-21 years old then, while Karunanidhi was 21 senior to her.

In those days, a program was being run by DMK's own self-styled Kalyanam. According to this, neither the boy nor the girl used to go to court for marriages and nor were any mantras recited.

Karunanidhi also took this path and married Rajati after seeking blessings from party leaders. Although, Karananidhi's wife Dayalu was still living with him, when Rajati arrived, she became to be known as Sangini. A year later Kanimozhi was born in 1968.
