M Karunanidhi, former CM of Tamil Nadu and DMK leader passes away, leaders condole death
M Karunanidhi, former CM of Tamil Nadu and leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), passed away at age 94, on 7 August 2018, at the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai after a prolonged old age-related illness that had led to multiple-organ failure. He had been admitted to the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai on July 28 this year.

Karunanidhi (1924 – 2018), popularly called Kalaignar, had served as the chief minister of the state of Tamil Nadu for five separate and ten-time president of the DMK.

It may be recalled that before entering politics, he worked in the Tamil film industry as a screenwriter.

Kalaignar – the artist – was his popular name as he made contributions to Tamil literature, having written stories, plays, novels and memoir.

His body is going to be kept at Rajaji Hall for the public homage. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and PM Narendra Modi have expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Karunanidhi.

"I am grieved by the passing away of Shri M Karunanidhi, one of the leading and longstanding politicians of our country who left a mark of his own during his long public life of about 80 years including 56 years as Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly," he said in a released message.

He added, "I had a long acquaintance with Shri Karunanidhi, he is a great orator, writer, administrator of our times. In the demise of Shri Karunanidhi, the country lost a man of letters and able administrator and a reformer. I deeply mourn passing away Shri Karunanidhi and offer my sincere condolences to the members of the grieved family."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the passing away of Kalaignar Karunanidhi saying, "Deeply saddened by the passing away of Kalaignar Karunanidhi. He was one of the senior most leaders of India. We have lost a deep-rooted mass leader, prolific thinker, accomplished writer and a stalwart whose life was devoted to the welfare of the poor and the marginalised."

"I have had the opportunity of interacting with Karunanidhi Ji on several occasions. His understanding of policy and emphasis on social welfare stood out. Firmly committed to democratic ideals, his strong opposition to the Emergency will always be remembered," added Modi.

Condoling Karunanidhi's death, Modi said, "My thoughts are with the family and the countless supporters of Karunanidhi Ji in this hour of grief. India and particularly Tamil Nadu will miss him immensely. May his soul rest in peace."
