SET IN the backdrop of colonial rule in India, Madrasapattinam is a melancholic tell tale of a distraught lover who sets outside her homeland in the search of her lover whom she had last seen on 15th August, 1947 with the only identification then available being a photograph which was taken 60 years back.
The story begins in 1940's when the British were ready to leave the Indian soil and how an innocent and valorous Tamil youth falls for the Governor's daughter. Their romance is tested when the British decide to leave the country thus adding a dash of patriotism and political background.
The resemblance of “Titanic” cannot be ignored from the movie as the old lady (the Governor's daughter) explains the story to the younger generation. The period film has done full justice with the looks of Madras as it used to look then. The art director, Selva Kumar recreated the old magic by giving the movie its own dhobikhana, the waterways at Buckingham Canal, the Central Station and its platforms, trams, royal governmental buildings etc.The music of the film is equally appealing too, with the correct blend of melancholy in the background. The music may transport anyone who is well versed with the Illayaraja style of music. The music may take G V Prakash Kumar places like it is expected to take Priyadarshan's protege, Vijay after this movie.

beautiful movie, amazing script, the best!
fav movie
excellent movie, real Love story, Amy & Arya super acting, very nice, must watch movie
Well, i appreciate the effort put on to make the movie. Arya and the heroine have done a good job.
Art direction department has excelled. Great job.
music was fine, songs are ok.
to provide my straight opinion, the movie lagged a strong storyline or good making. It was more of a amature filmmaking, i would say.
Inspired from Titanic, some from lagaan. some from Heyram. I could also sense some scenes resembling Nayagan and Thalapathy. There is nothing wrong in getting inspired or even trying to tell the story/scene simillar to another highly accalimed movie, but the point is you should do justification. that is really missing.
Why Emy has to come back after so many years, to meet this guy paruthi ?
How Emy fell in love with Paruthi ?
in one scene Arya tells her sister, almost the end of the movie, everything will go well, mother said. How mother said, he has provided the thali ( mangalya) to emy already, then how did he ask his mother ?
I could remember only arya and the herione in the movie. no other villager ( particularly his friends names). When the old Emy meets Kabir (old man who dies in the hospital) in the hospital ICU, You dont understand who the hell this guy is. no way you are able to relate to the villager or Arya friends.
There are many flaws, I dont have patience to write down all of them. May be i willl write a detailed review some other time.
as of now, watch the movie with low expectations, and appreciate the effort ( particularly for the art department )
My long wait for British-Raj film was over after seeing madrasapatinam. I am big fan of British-Raj movies like far pavillions, heat and dust, passage to india, etc. It was my long dream to see a similar tamil movie. madraspatinam is all what I was waiting for. The accuracy of the era was amazing and all the actors have done and incredible job. Amy jackson was not just lovely but had given and outstanding performance. Kudos to the entire team
AWESOME MOVIE...ARYA AND AMY JACKSON ROCKED THE FLOOR..VERY ROMANTIC FILM OF THE YEAR ALONG WITH VTV..ITS THE SECOND FILM AFTER VTV WHICH MADE MY 200BUCKS WORTH..ENJOYABLE AS WELL AN EXPERIENCE..MUSIC BRILLIANT..VERY SENSIBLE CLIMAX WITH PATRIOTISM
Madrasaoattinam is worth watching. The Feel of the movie is extrodinary right from the title card till the Tilte card at the end. Characterisation of each is also good. Good food for eyes with the work of Cinematography, Precise ReRecording done by GVP and most importantly the Art Director has awakened many Nostalgic Hearts who long to see the very old Chennai....yenum....Madrasaipattinam. This Movie should be watched only in the Big screen to get the feel. Great Job Over All.
