VJAS also expressed unhappiness over the silence of the state government about the much hyped scheme of selling wheat and rice at Rs 1 per kilo. It also alleged that state government schemes to help tribals had failed to take off.
THE MAHARASHTRA state budget for the year 2011-12 presented by State Finance Minister Ajit Pawar in the Maharashtra Assembly has ignored the 3 million debt trapped cotton farmers as state-owned debt touched Rs. 231,000 crore during fiscal 2010-11.
“As 3 million cotton farmers have lost cotton crop this year, it was expected from the state to address the ongoing agrarian crisis and announce a bailout package as most of the funds for distressed farmers have been siphoned by corrupt babus.
However, nothing has been given hence we are disappointed. The state has failed to give much awaited food security and health security to dying cotton farmers and for more than 10,000 farm widows and family members, who have committed suicide since 2005 this is much more disturbing,” Kishor Tiwari of Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti(VJAS) said in a press release.“We welcome the decision to give zero per cent crop loan up to Rs. 50,000/- and 2 per cent interest up to Rs. 3 lakh but this facility can be availed by the farmers, who are regular with banks", said Tiwari, adding that the farmers, who are debt trapped and facing crop failure should be given a bailout package. He also demanded some measures for farmers caught in the shackles of money lenders and microfinance institutions.VJAS has also flayed the rosy announcement of creating irrigation facility for another 2 lakh hectares as most of money available under AIBP from Government of India has been siphoned off. Tiwari alleged that state government was not serious in implementing the irrigation projects on the ground as it had limited funds.
