Maharashtra to grant 180 days maternity leave to women having baby through surrogacy
After the Bombay High Court ruled last year that a mother having a child through surrogacy too is entitled for maternity leave, Maharashtra will be the first state in the nation where women employees in government service can avail benefit of 180 days maternity leave.

Recently, several courts across the nation have ordered that such leaves should be given in particular cases. But, finally, Maharashtra government is first to have taken an initiative to issue a government resolution to the effect.

Once executed, the women employees will have to apply formally to the concerned authority who will then decide on the applications.

The leaves will be given only from the date of the child's birth. Besides, it will also be granted only once in the employee's tenure of service.

Employees working in the state's educational institutions and universities can also receive the benefit of this new provision.

Currently, the maternity leave rules allow 180 days' maternity leave to the pregnant lady and 90 days for women adopting kids but has no relaxation to the mother having child through surrogacy.
