MAHASHIVRATRI 2010 falling on Friday, February 12 is one of the major festivals for Lord Shiva devotees, who spend the day and the whole night fasting and chanting mantras to please the god.
According to the Hindi calender, Shivaratri falls on the 13th night or 14th day in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Phalguna. Mythology behind the Shivaratri festival is the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Parvati.
Mahashivaratri is celebrated widely in the temples of Lord Shiva in every part of India. Shivratri festival mainly celebrated at all the twelve Jyotirlings shrines in the country. These Jyotirlings are at Somnath in Gujrat, Mallikarjuna in Andhra Pradesh, Mahakaleshwar at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, Bhimashankar in Maharastra, Kashi Vishwanath at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Trimbakeshwar at Nashik in Maharastra, Vaidyanath at Deogarh in Jharkhand, Nageshvara at Dwarka in Gujrat, Ramalingeswarar at Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu and Grishneshwar at Aurangabad district in Maharastra.
On the day of Shivratri or Mahashivratri devotees observe fast for the complete day and night and pour milk, Ganga water, bael leaves, cannabies (Bhaang) on the Shivalingam in the temples. The night long celebrations of Mahashivaratri includes cultural programs, rudra homa, prayers to Lord Shiva. On this divine night of Shivaratri, individual seek blessings and darshan at all the Shiva temples in India, Nepal and Mauritius. In some places, wedding rituals of Lord Shiva and Goddess are also observed on the divine night of Mahashivratri.
