Mahatma Gandhi still relevant in 2011
He was a man who rose and conquered on the basis of his deeds Thanks to the Father of the Nation there is some semblance of sanity in a nation that always seems to be on the brink of insanity.

IN THE post modern era where terrorism, violence and scams are happening on a daily basis Mahatma Gandhi is more relevant than ever before. His principles of non-violence and Satyagraha seems to be the only thing working at least where India is concerned. Ironically, politicians, film makers and the Indian public is taking to Gandhian principles at a time when bomb blasts, bad politics and dirty mind games are rampant.

The most recent example is Anna Hazare who took India by storm with his anti-corruption slogans and his fast. While cynics termed him as a fake, millions says that he is the next Gandhi. His famous Satyagraha had to be noticed by the ruling government - such was his power. But if one analyzes, he did not resort to any violence, did very little oratory and still captured the heart of millions. Thanks to him the start of the battle against corruption happened.

When in one part of the world, Anna was leading almost the entire country on a candle march, on the other part a small frail lady is still sticking by her vow to free Manipur of AFSPA. Irom Sharmila is being force fed by the state government for the last 10 years. This lady who feels that AFSPA is taking undue advantage of the special act, and wants the government to take these powers away. A brave lady, like Anna, is very polite and battling for the people of India. On 2 October 2006, Irom Sharmila Chanu went to Raj Ghat, New Delhi, "to pay floral tribute to my idol, Mahatma Gandhi."

Both examples show that Gandhi has become more relevant in post-modern India. There is a section of people who understand the power of non-violence in an atmosphere where violence is omnipotent. A lot of films in our times have showed the power of the Gandhian principles and the most common example is Munna Bhai. Let's hope the futuristic leaders' words help us in the future as well.
