A MAJOR fire broke out in the New Market area in Nagaon, Assam on Thursday (July 29), at around 8.45 pm causing extensive damage to property. The fire swept a huge area and destroyed more than five shops.
Eyewitnesses said that the flames were witnessed high in the sky and people and shopkeepers of the nearby areas rushed immediately towards the spot to control the fire. The fire fighters of fire service department also rushed to the spot, but had to face serious difficulties to battle the blaze, which took more than 45 minutes to control. The fire fighters, who had a hectic time fighting the blaze are yet to establish the cause of fire and the estimate of property loss.
The police personnel also rushed to the scene immediately to cordon off the area to prevent any untoward incident.
