MALKANGIRI DISTRICT said to be the Maoist hotbed in the state has witnessed hectic Maoist violence and the Maoists have proved their presence in nine of the eleven police station areas over the years.The red rebels have succeed in spreading the their anti-government movement to all most all the 108 gram panchayats of the district in the backdrop of the adequate socio-economic development of the region.They have reportedly recruited more than 1000 cadres into their peoples Liberation Guerilla Army over the years.
Registration of cases related to Naxal activities with Kalimela, Mathili, Motu, Papermetla, Chitrakonda, M.V-79, Orkel, Mudulipada and Malkangiri police limits has proved the fact.Highest number of 22 Naxal activities have been reported from Kalimela police limits alone by August of this year.The Maoist sponsored violence has resulted in the death of 63 state policemen including the SOG commandos and A.P Grey Hound police.
Sixteen CRPF,OSAP and IRB personnel’s have also been killed in the violence.This apart,32 civilians have been killed by the Maoists since 1993.More ever,8 civilians have been killed in 2009 alone.Most of the civilians have been reportedly killed on the charges of police informers.
Human Rights activists and experts working in the field have blamed the state and Central government for the situation.The injustice made to the Southern Orissa, particulary to Malkangiri by the successive governments over the years has pushed the region into such a situation,they said. If the governments does not ensure an end to the systematic exploitation of the tribals in the region, resentment among the ‘adivasis’will go on resulting in further aggravating the situation in the region, they warned.
