To all and sundry it is just a bit of humor, a harmless depiction of a recent incident. But – Mamata-didi is not in any frame of mind to accept humor. She nurses a feeling that everyone is out to tarnish her image and are conspirators.
It may be mentioned that making fun of celebrities, especially politicians, is an accepted way of life – a bit of laugh can release tensions. Cyrus Broucha does it every Sunday on his TV show ‘The Week That Wasn’t’ – he literally puts words in the mouths of he politicians and his viewers are delighted.
But, the Professor of Jadavpur University has met with the wrath of the Chief Minister for a similar style of humor.
He has been not only heckled and physically assaulted by goons of the TMC but he has been charged under various IPC acts and cases have been registered against him for breaking the Cyber Laws.
Within 10-months, the people of West Bengal have begun to repent the choice they had made and many of them have begun to rue their decision to overthrow the 34-year old regime of the CPM-led left front and usher in a change by hoisting the TMC to power. But, it has not brought the desired change. It now appears a case of old wine in new bottle. Only – it is now more of dictatorship rather than democracy.
Mamata has been criticized by stalwarts of Bengali culture – persons like Mahashewta Devi, Sunil Gangopadhaya, Kabir Suman, Sunanda Sanyal etc. Disappointment is writ large in the minds of these luminaries who had a year earlier been key supporters of Mamata and her cause.
Anyway, Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra does not appear to be one who will take things lying down – he has lodged an FIR with the police indicating the names of those persons who had heckled him.
