Mamata Banerjee gets jittery at the very mention of TATA Nano 04 January, 2012
Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal has, at the last minute, cancelled a proposed trip of the WB Assembly Standing Committee to Sanand, in Gujarat, current home to TATA's Nano car project.

IT SEEMS she was incensed because she had not been kept updated on the visit of a team to Gujarat to see how Tato Nano car project did in Sanand. She gets jittery at the very mention of NANO – is it her Achilles Heel?

The 9-member team would have been on a 5-day trip and included members, not only from the ruling TMC (Trinamool Congress) but also from the INC (Indian National Congress) and the CPM. While the leader of the team was from the Forward Block, there were two members of the CPM, one of the INC and the remaining belonged to the TMC.

Obviously, Mamata did not feel it right that her ministers visit Sanand to see for themselves how it has prospered in the wake of TATA’s Nano project. She must be repenting, in private her decision to oust the project from Singur. Singur would have prospered, instead of Sanand, had the project been there.

Three more automobile firms have, reportedly, landed up and invested in Sanand to add to the prosperity of the region.

Mamata Banerjee had made pre-poll promises to return the land acquired by the left front government for the TATA Nano project to the unwilling farmers – that has not yet materialized even though seven months have passed since she has come to power. That also must be haunting her.
