IN THE wake of Sainthia rail accident in West Bengal, which lead to the death of at least sixty people, the Union Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a railway job as well as compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of those killed in the accident.
She also announced Rs 1 lakh for those grieviously injured and sum of Rs 25000 for those with minor injuries.
Meanwhile, the Railway Minister has also expressed reservations over the reason behind the death. Banerjee alluded to to the involvement of a third party behind the railway accident, as it happened in the Jnaneswari train accident, which was carried out by Maoists. Over sixty people people were killed today when the Uttarbanga Express coming from New Cooch Behar to Sealdah rammed into a stationary Bhagalpur-Ranchi Vananchal Express at Sainthia station in Birbhum district some 200 kilometers north of Kolkatta in the wee hours of Monday morning. This is the second such case in a span of one and a half months after the Jnaneshwari Express accident in which 148 people had lost their lives. The former accident was plotted by CPI(Maoist) supporters in the West Midnapore district. It is reported that over 86 people have been shifted to nearby hospitals and some are in critical condition. It is assumed that most of the bodies are from the general compartment as it the cheapest and carries maximum number of passengers. The growing number of causalities are being excavated from the Vananchal Express. The drivers of both the trains died due to the impact although there is no trace of the assistant drivers from either of the trains. Apart from the local rescue help the government deployed the National Disaster Management forces, BSF, police and the army has sent 7 officers with 160 soldiers.
