MANCHESTER UNITED (Man U) defeated West Ham United (WHU) 2-0 in the Barclays Premier League, played in the Old Trafford on Wednesday (October 29).
Ronaldo, the Portuguese striker of Man U scored the first goal in the 13th minute after receiving a brilliant cross from Nani. Berbatov, Nani and Ronaldo, the Man U trio posed threat to WHU defence throughout the first half. Again in the 29th minute, Berbatov made a brilliant pass, which Ronaldo finished with aplomb and added one more feather in their cap.
Sir Alex Ferguson was quite impressed with his boys’ performance in the first half, but the repeated failures before the WHU goal box throughout the second half left him irritated as well. Tevez, the Argentine striker of the Man U, who played for 90 minutes, could have scored one, if the same was not saved by Robert Green, the WHU goalie.
Gianfranco Zola, the WHU coach made two changes in the first half. Boa Morte was brought in the 44th minute as Behrami suffered a knee injury and was taken off the field on a stretcher. Etherington was replaced by Collison in the 45th minute but received a yellow card later for his excessive aggressiveness. In the 69th minute, Zola picked up Bowyer and placed Sears on the field. But his shattered castle failed to reply boldly.
Fletcher and Nani were picked up untouched by Ferguson in the 69th minute. He placed Rooney and Carrick as their substitutes. Rooney as usual remained ravenous for goals, but WHU defence blocked him from scoring a single. Neville was Ferguson’s last change in the 81st minute instead of Da Silva. Evra was the only Man U player who was shown the yellow card by referee P Walton.
The former champion, Man U presently has 18 points and ranks sixth. After playing ten matches, WHU has bagged twelve points and stands at eleventh position.
