Mandala painting can be inspirational, therapeutic and soulful experience, says hobbyist
"A mandala is symmertical abstract but auspicious design that is usually circular in form with an identifiable central point around which an array of geometrical shapes, organic forms, patterns, images and symbols are arranged. Making or painting of mandalas lift both mind and spirit. Many people make mandalas and meditate on them for spiritual up-liftment," said retired civil engineer Pardeep Arora of Faridabad who had brought a painting to be gifted to a newlywed couple in Jaipur.

He showed his painting to me telling that 'mandala' was a Sanskrit word meaning 'circle' that symbolised the connection between the inner world of a person and outer reality. Designing or one's own mandalas can be inspirational, therapeutic and soul-lifting, he added. After retirement, he has made it a hobby to paint madalas periodically and his training in engineering drawing was helpful to him, he continued.

With a little drawing background and making a few mandalas to get a hang of the basic steps, one can starts creating own mandalas by listening to the inner voice. He further revealed, "If you are drawing  a mandala to be gifted to someone, thinking of his or her wellbeing.

"Eversince I have started making mandalas, I have become calmer and my self-awareness has enhanced. Indian culture had a rich history of mandala designing and even remote villages the floor painting are dome in mandala style," he informed.

One does not require many materials to learn how to draw a mandala since one can begin with paper sheet, a dark pencil, a ruler, and an eraser to make a beginning. One can take the picture of the drawing and use a photo editing software to colour it.

Also, sketch pens, crayons and coloured pencils can be reasonable tools to make beginning before using various painting surfaces, water colours, paints and use of brushes, he suggested.

I felt inspired and thought of getting into the act of designing and decorating mandalas with coloured pencils which are lying unused in the house.
