In fact meek Manmohan Singh was so desperate to lay the foundation of peace that he forgot that he was barking up the wrong tree. Mian Nawaz Sharif was the same wily politician who had shown the green light to General Musharraf’s misadventure in Kargil and he was not interested in peace at all.
Mian Nawaz Sharif was supported by the Mullas, Maulvis, Talibans and Jihadi elements in his election to the National Assembly and run for power. So he had no reason to antagonise his supporters and back Dr Manmohan Singh in his endeavour to net the Nobel Peace Prize.
In any case the latter was a non-starter. Blinded as the Pakistan-born naturalised Indian Sikh was with the dazzle of the word Nobel, he failed to see the reality in Pakistan. He did not appreciate the ground reality that it was the Pakistan Army that called the shots in that country.
Three 'A's in Pakistan
The three 'A's that ruled Pakistan till a decade ago were: America, Army and Allah – in the same order. Now that America has retreated for good and Allah needs relocation, it is the Army that rules the roost.
'Maun' Mohan could not be ignorant of the real balance of power in Pakistan but it was his misconceived quest for personal glory that clouded his logical thinking. The large amount of investment that he made in pushing peace process with Pakistan gave him a return that was minus Zero.
The wily Nawaz Sharif was by no means Sharif or noble. He gave a body blow to his Indian counterpart by calling him a Dehti Aurat or a rural woman who went running to the US President to complain every now and then. In the words of Shakespeare “ It was the most unkindest cut of all”.
Narendra Modi, the Prime minister of India -in-waiting observed that the Prince of the Congress party had insulted Dr Manmohan Singh by calling him names. The draft Ordinance on the tainted leaders approved by the Prime minister of India was termed as “Nonsense that should be torn and thrown out”, and thus that 42-year old bachelor behaved like a teenager.
If a leader is insulted by an extra-constitutional authority at home, he cannot avoid being insulted by the leader of a rogue state called Pakistan.
In our rural parlance the remark would be: 'Nawaz Sharif ne bina sharafat dikhaye Manmohan ki pagari uchhal di.'
In his old age Dr Manmohan stooped too low but could not conquer anybody or anything. So sad, Sir, but never mind this new insult since in public life one gets used to it. In any case the day is not far off when the Public would let you retire from active public life. Wishing you happy retired life, Manmohan Singh Ji.
