Manna Dey gets Dada Saheb Phalke award for 2007
Prabodh Chandra Dey, who is popularly known as Manna Dey, was felicitated with the Dadasaheb Phalke award for the year 2007, for his outstanding contribution to the India cinema. Dey began his career by singing for the film Tamanna in 1943.

RENOWNED INDIAN singer Manna Dey is the recipient of the Dada Saheb Phalke Award for the year 2007 for outstanding contribution to the India cinema. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh, a Swaran Kamal and a shawl.
 
Manna Dey has recorded more than 3500 songs in his long career and dominated the Indian film playback music since the 1950s. He has won numerous awards in his singing career, which include the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the Hindi Film “Mere Huzur” and the Bengali film “Nishi Padma”. He has also been honoured with the Padmashree and Padma Bhushan.
 
Dey started his career in playback singing with the film Tamanna in 1943. The songs of the film were an instant hit and since then there has been no looking back. Trained in classical traditions, he has displayed versatility by rendering songs, Qawalis and Ghazals, apart from Bhajans and other religious songs.
 
Some of his famous songs include “Laga Chuneri mein daag”, “Pyaar hua iqraar hua”, “Ye raat bheegi bheegi”, “Kasme wade pyaar wafa ”etc. Some of the well known films for which he has lent his voice include Awaara, Do Bigha Zamin, Mera Naam Joker, Bobby, Zanjeer, Padosan and Sholay.
 
His real name is Prabodh Chandra Dey and he was born to Purna Chandra and Mahamaya Devi on May 1, 1919.
