Manohar Lal Khattar swears in as CM of Haryana: Will Gurgaon women benefit from his leadership?
Manohar Lal Khattar is the 10th Chief Minister of Haryana and was sworn-in on October 26, 2014. The Bhartiya Janata Party member was a former RSS pracharak and slowly rose to meteoric heights in the Modi government. Known to be a trusted man of Modi, he has a clean image and comes from the lower middle class and has helped his family through some trying times. A bachelor and a hard worker, he seemed the man for the job. However, will Haryana and most importantly Gurgaon benefit from such a man?

Born on May 5, 1954 in a village called Nidana in Rohtak district of Haryana to a Punjabi shopkeeper, he comes from an old school of thought. Believing that women should be within their 'limits,' he is a man who upholds the khap panchayats view of how men and women of the same village are brothers and sisters.

A remark of his, which many have forgotten over the joy of his being selected the CM was, ''If a girl is dressed decently, a boy will not look at her in the wrong way. If you want freedom, why don't they just roam around naked? Freedom has to be limited. These short clothes are western influences. Our country's tradition asks girls to dress decently.''

Many may not find any problem with the statement, but we have to question whether we can have a CM, whose point of view is narrow minded and does nothing to forward the debate, which we have almost everyday - who is responsible for rape, sexual harassment and violation of a women's modesty.

Coming from a small village, Khattar is the first non-Jat Chief Minister in Haryana in 18 years. The man started working with the RSS in 1977 at the age of 24 and in a short span of three years he became a pracharak. After 14 years he moved to BJP and was the Organizational General Secretary of BJP in Haryana and Chairman of the party's Election campaign Comittee for the last elections.

He is hailed as the man who would develop Haryana. However, for Gurgaon specially he would have to rethink his own ideals as it is a city where the rich and the poor reside. Here corporate culture and the immigration population are high and to think that women should be indoors or wear appropriate (according to men) dress should be revisited or else he would not be able to solve problems of rapes and harassment.
