MAOISTS BLEW up a Panchayat office at Malavaram under Kalimela block of Malkangiri district in Odisha last night (August 13). Around forty Maoists are suspected to have participated in the operation. The Maoists reached the village and rounded up its inhabitants for few hours to explain to the public, why and what for they were going to blast the Panchayat office.
Later they planted explosives inside the Panchayat building and blasted the building. According to the Malkangiri police, the Maoists also left posters at the spot of the blast through which they claimed the damaged building was being used as a camp by security personnel. Security has been tightened in the area as this act of violence came a couple of days before the Independence Day, which they have already declared as a Black Day and given a call to boycott it.
Maoists have been continuing to target school buildings, Panchayat offices, ware houses buildings as these buildings are being used by the security forces during the anti-naxal operation. Local politicians have also expressed unhappiness over the Naikguga panchayat office being converted into a BSF police camp four days back. It must be stated that the people in the area are not in a position to move after 7 pm from Koraput to Malkangiri out of fear.
