NAXALS CALL themselves as Maoists, they are a group of violent Communists who seem to have rejected parliamentary democracy and have imposed dictatorship of their party.

Initially, the Maoists started their operations in West Bengal, but now they have increased their network. The Maoist-affected areas are some of the less developed states of rural, central and eastern India such as Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

Recently, the count of Maoist areas has been increased from 83 to 103. They are mainly concentrated in an area which is called “Red Corridor”. Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has declared Maoists as the most serious threat to India's national security. In 2009, the Indian central government announced a nation-wide initiative called “Integrated action plan (IAP)” for broad, co-ordinated operations dealing with the Maoist problems in all Maoist-affected states, and after this plan in 2010, Karnataka was removed from the list of Maoist-affected states.

Operation Green Hunt was the operation name used to describe the Government of India's paramilitary offensive against the Maoists. The operation started in the five states, which were under the Red Corridor in November 2009, the 1st phase of the operation began in Gadchiroli district. The Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (COBRA) took the lead in the operation.

The Government of India is taking lots of measures to tackle the problem of Maoists. Recently, Home Minister P. Chidambaram decided to sanction Rs 415 crores to nine Naxal-hit states. He also renewed the offer for peace talks with Maoists. Now let’s hope for a Maoists-free India.
