IN A landmine blast set off by the suspected Maoists on rail tracks near Jhargram in West Midnapore district in West Bengal, two drivers of a goods train were injured and the engine of the freight train was totally damaged on Wednesday (May 19). The injured have been taken to the hospital.

The blast took place at around 2am on Wednesday at Khatkhura halt station and thus disrupted train services on both the up and the down lines on the Kharagpur-Tata Nagar section of South Eastern Railway.

Soon after the Maoist attack, railway officers and joint forces reached the spot to inspect the blast site and they ensured restoration of traffic as soon as possible. They also informed that several rail sleepers were blown up and the overhead power cable cut on both tracks by the impact of the blast.

Rail services came to a halt on both tracks with several long-distance trains either diverted or stranded at various stations since 2 am, the officials informed. Ahmedabad Express (from Howrah), Uttakal Express (Bhubaneshwar - Delhi) and Purushottam Express (from Puri to Delhi) are the trains which have been diverted so far. Again, at various stations some trains to Howrah are stranded. These include the Bombay Mail, Ranchi Express and Koraput Express.

On Monday (May 17) last, Maoists attacked a bus in Dantewada in Chhattisgarh, killing 31 people including women, children and security men. Wednesday’s blast came on the second day of the two-day five-state bandh called by the Maoists.
