Maoists burn machines meant for road work
A group of about more than 150 armed personnel suspected to be Maoists set ablaze 2 Earth Movers, 2 Tractors and Machinery used for road construction work.

THE MATERIAL was worth about more than Rs 20 crores at Pandrapuda under Khairaput Block in Malakangiri district on Wednesday night. The machines belonged to an Andhra Pradesh based private construction company engaged in Gobindapalli - Ballimela road work. The machines, which were kept near the camp, were damaged. The Naxals had asked the workers to leave the site before burning the machines. The incident took place 2 kms away from the BSF camp, and 10 km from the police station.

A hand-written poster was left by the Naxals at the site asking the construction company authorities to stop the road work immediately and take up welfare activities for the poor, police sources said. The Naxals also demanded the government to withdraw the security forces immediately.

The Malkangiri district is prone to Maoist activities. In the first week of September Maoists shot and killed a contractor, suspecting him of being an informer of police. In February, the Malkangiri Collector R Vineel Krishna, and junior engineer Pabitra Manjhi, were abducted from Malkangiri district by Maoists. They were held in captivity for almost a week.
