The former first lady of California has made up her mind and taken a step and filed for divorce from husband Arnold Schwarzenegger. A mother of four, this must have been a hard decision - to choose between heart and responsibility.

MARIA SHRIVER took long walks on the beach, went to have pedicures and spent time with close friends to decide her fate and she arrived at a decision that she will not be able to live with her husband of 25 years Arnold Schwarzenegger. They were married in 1986.

Thus, finally, after 6 weeks of contemplation, she filed a divorce with her husband who admitted to have fathered a love-child with their housekeeper, Mildred Patricia "Patty" Baena. Known to have stuck by her husband at the time when he was running for Governor of California (in which he had a successful bid), and was accused of groping women, this time Maria could not bear the breach of trust.

The lady with a Kennedy linage cited the age-old two words as the reason for the split, which is "irreconcilable differences". Much has already been said about the affair of the former actor - so everyone knows that when Maria Shriver said that she was just being dignified. The couple have four kids together, two of them are minors. The couple are believed not to have a pre-nuptial, and so the assets of Arnold Schwarzenegger would be evenly divided between them.

Maria, who has been trying to hide her pain from the eyes of the press, even made an Oprah appearance after the world came to know about the Terminator’s behaviour. In every public appearance the lady was poised and held her own ground. She even put her journalistic career on hold to support her husband run for the elections.

It really takes a brave lady to address the mistress of her husband and to show compassion to her. As reported by a reputed media source, Maria did confront her housekeeper, when she saw her child, who had a strong resemblance with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Her housekeeper broke down to confess but still she remained calm and handled the situation well. She left her palatial house on May 9 and never came back. In between, there was news that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver were on talking terms, and were trying to work out things for the sake of their children but now it seems that Maria knows better. She did support her husband once but now she knows the right decision would be to move away and start life afresh.
