Mars mission simulation begins in Russia
An international team of astronauts and scientists in Russia has climbed into a set of windowless steel capsules for simulation of a flight to Mars. The experiment could be disrupted for medical or technical reasons if demanded by the crew.

IN RUSSIA, an international team of astronauts and scientists climbed into a set of windowless steel capsules for simulation of a flight to Mars.

Purpose: To train the future space crews cope with confinement, stress and fatigue of long interplanetary travel.

Highlights:

  • Five hundred and twenty days simulation training;
  • An all-male six-member crew consisting of three Russians, a Frenchman, an Italian-Colombian and a Chinese;
  • A tight regimen of experiments and exercise under video surveillance;
  • Communication with the outside world via Internet;
  • Astronauts likely to orbit Mars by the mid 2030s.

The crew will have eight hours of work, eight hours of sleep and eight hours of leisure.

According to the mission director, cosmonaut Boris Morukov, the experiment could be disrupted for medical or technical reasons if demanded by the crew.
