Masked gunman opens fire at a casino in Manila & later sets himself ablaze
According to media reports, a masked gunman stormed into the casino at Resorts World Manila hotel in the capital city of Philippines on June 1 and opened fire at the guests, most of whom were foreigners, causing panic and injuring a few people.

Later, the gunman is said to have set himself ablaze in one of the hotel rooms and died.

Though the police were suspecting the incident to be a failed robbery attempt but with that Islamic State claiming responsibility, it is being feared to be a terror attack. The police are said to be investigating the incident and the hotel has been locked down in the meanwhile.

Reportedly, the US President Donald Trump hastily termed the Manila casino shooting as a terrorist attack. The police in Manila is still trying to establish the identity and affiliation of the gunman who set himself alight after the incident.

It is gathered that since January 2000, radical Islamist groups and Islamist separatist forces in the Philippines have been bombing civilians and civilian property mainly in the southern regions of the country. Also, some bombings have been carried out in and around Metro Manila in the capital city of the country.

Recent armed conflict in Marawi that started on 23 May 2017 between Philippines government security forces and militants of the Maute and Abu Sayyaf Salafi jihadist groups has worried the Western world on expanding Islamic terrorism in the region.

Due to on-going armed conflict in Marawi, the neighbouring Malaysia has begun tightening of its border with the Philippines and the United Kingdom has issued advisory to its citizens to avoid travelling to western Mindanao.
