National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) data states that 1,121 cases of rapes were reported in Delhi in the first 8 months which is more than double than last year's figure of 468 for the same period. In 2011, the numbers of registered rape cases were 572, while 507 rape cases were reported in 2010. The figures were 469, 466, 598, 623, 658, 551, 490, 403, and 381 respectively for 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001.
A very high rise in number of rape cases in recent years not only in Delhi but in other cities and regions of the country is also caused by free-flow of pornographic materials from foreign markets. For mongers, business means profit at any cost. The business interests of vicious market-players have ensued into the downpour of obscene products for entertainment in the country.
The market-players involved in entertainment industry have rampantly vitiated our society in the name of modern-day freedom by promoting vulgar entertainment. By misinterpreting the new age definition of sexual entertainment and promotion of unrestricted sexual pleasure, these mongers have wrongfully misled the society, especially the less educated class in large.
Without any remorse and without any ethical obligation to society, many entertainment firms and business persons of Indian cinema with hands in gloves with politicians, and law-enforcement departments are currently focused on rendering raunchy entertainment to the society for making extra bucks. Porn artists are invited to Indian cinema by few market-players (here, a special reference is marked to a famous Bollywood family who are well-known for promoting depravity in the society) whereas female cine-artists are asked to expose their body indecently and many times compelled to go bare.
Moreover, in order to involve in such publicity and promotion, the Indian cinema deliberately and excessively highlight intimate relationship on bed whereas songs are purposely reproduced with female foreign dancers clad scantly. Betrayal in a relationship by means of sex, sexual favors, and sexual harassment at workplace, with anyone and anywhere are being delineated as subjects currently in our cinema which are leaving wrong impression on people, youngsters and children also. The impact on society of the cheap unethical business interests of entertainment industry is atrocious, alarming, and long lasting.
Indian Film Censor Board and various law enforcement departments have turned deaf and indifferent to the monstrous problem of a vitiated society. In Indian metro cities, people are more or less money-oriented as well as phlegmatic to crimes unless one of them become victim of predators. It is exigently required that concerned departments and the society too start mass awareness to check reckless propagation of obscene movies and dispensation of pornographic stuffs. Mongers, for whom business means profit, must be sternly dealt and punished for promoting voyeurism and instigating the society with porn products.
Indian cinema must produce good movies, which should serve society in good by causing mass awareness and help in curbing incidences of rape and other crimes. Recently, a video – titled 'It's Your Fault!' – featuring Kalki Koechlin and VJ Juhi Pande is viral on Internet, which takes a dig on culprits and on the orthodox society in large. Governments and NGOs must start similar drives and many awareness programs to enlighten the society.
It should be made mandatory that a short clipping of mass awareness to be included as a prelude and during intermission of every movie. Similar awareness programs should be run during radio and TV broadcasts on large scale. Laws, sentences meant to curb crimes like rape, and verdicts delivered in special cases should be reproduced during movie shows and on radio and TV broadcasts.
It is assumed that altogether 60-70% population have access to one or more entertainment programs meant for general public – a major chunk of population go to watch movies and have access to TV and radio programs. It could also be made mandatory for all mobile service companies to disseminate regularly awareness messages and SMS of punitive laws to their customers regularly.
The current issue of increasing rape crimes and sexual harassment is alarming. It is utter demanding that the scenario must be dealt properly with necessary measures, actions, and mass awareness programs.
