Matrimony Day: Marketing magic of marriage
I was surprised to receive a clipping about the International Matrimony Day from my Facebook friend and glanced at it amusedly. Equally amusing was the news about the court equating live-in relations with marriage, which was used by a Jaipur FM radio today to elicit opinion and comments from the listeners by airing love and marriage songs along with related ads.
Creation of days like Matrimony Day are promoted by market forces and are popularised by roping in some celebritis and market-related events. For example this year, a leading matrimony website kicked off a Signature Campaign flagged off by none other than Miss India World, Manasvi Mamgai to promote the celebration.

According to the organisers, the event is in the form of a signature campaign on wheels that will travel across India 'leaving a trail of fun, excitement and positive feelings about matrimony'.

Market forces are always out to create and cash on the celebration by selling to married couples the ascetic moments of togetherness. The event managers are happy that on this day they will be able to sell the expensive wedding ceremonies.

According to Wikipedia, a marriage market refers to a public place where advertisements are listed or marriage brokers are contacted for finding the marital spouse or match. After China, India is another upcoming marriage market with an estimated worth of Rs. 250 billion, reports Wikipedia.
