Mayawati must stop misusing public money

Mayawati threatened at a public gathering in Lucknow that a serious law and order situation could arise in the country if the monuments dedicated to Dalit icons are demolished or vandalised. She should understand that public needs to be spent wisely.

UTTAR PRADESH chief minister Mayawati blames the Congress of being anti-Dalit, and says if thousands of crores of rupees can be spent on building parks, memorial and statutes in the name of the Gandhi and Nehru families, why can not she build Dalilt icons memorials and parks.

She accused the Congress and Samajwadi party of indulging in a malicious propaganda and denied that her government violated the Apex court order of suspending construction. She also accused the media of playing into the hands of the opposition.

All the uproar was created by Mayawati after media reports came that despite Supreme Court order to stop all construction activities forthwith, work at memorial sites in Lucknow continued.

No one is denying that Mayawati can build memorials and parks in the name of Dalit icons as the Congress has done in the name of Gandhi and Nehru. But it is a genuine plea to the Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati that she should think over the matter and decide wisely.

The construction of memorials is going on at a time, when the country is reeling under drought-like situation and price rise. Remember, Uttar Pradesh has declared 58 districts as drought-hit and demanded Rs 7,800 crore from the Centre for drought relief.

In the current situation it is not a wise decision to build parks and all, spending crores of rupees from the state exchequer and putting additional burden on the Central treasury; especially at a time when the state is reeling under severe drought will make the matters worse.

However, the Supreme Court rebuff was not enough for the Mayawati government and she went to the extent of threatening at a public gathering in Lucknow of a serious law and order situation in the country, if the monuments dedicated to Dalit icons were demolished or vandalised.

Mayawati must stop provoking citizens on communal and caste lines and take some well-thought decisions. Go ahead and build memorials of your loved ones but please being at responsible position try to take stock of the situation the country is going on before arriving at a point.

And this is absolutely right that the UP governmnet is misusing the money, which should be used to provide succour to poor and downtrodden, who are the reeling under drought.
