In Janadhikar’s campaign to help out dependents of those died in electrocution cases renowned social and Janadhikar activist Ashok Shankaram reported this accident vide No. JANADHIKAR/PARIVAD-NHRC/2006/2076, dated October 14, 2006 to the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi.
The NHRC took cognizance of this on December 12,2006 and issued notice to Director General of Police, UP, and Chairman, Power Corporation calling for a response with six weeks time. It is disheartening to note that although the office of the Inspector General of Police (Human Rights) has responded to notice and replied supporting the contents of complaint of Alok having died by coming in contact with a live electric wire lying on the ground, the UPPCL has not paid any heed to the notice issued to Chairman of the power corporation. As a result of this, the NHRC issued a final reminder to the UPPCL Chairman on September 13, 2007, which his personal appearance along with relevant records to explain.
Following a second notification, the General Manager of UPPCL informed that an amount of Rs.50,000 has been paid to Neelam, wife of the deceased; vide Cheque No.083862, dated January 22, 2009. However, the complainant demanded that an ex-gratia should be paid to the tune of Rs. 4.34 lakhs, as decided by the Supreme Court of India.
