An investigation found that 95 per cent of the high officials were involved in corruption, having one or more mistresses. It is obvious that maintaining a mistress in their limited salary is not possible. So these officials take to corrupt practices.
MORAL LAXITY and corruption, emanating from misuse of power, have often gone hand in hand. Of late, too many influential members of the Chinese Communist party were found corrupt and morally lax.
The system of having a mistress by a high official is not new to China. In the Imperial times, right from the Emperor, his courtiers, governors and high officials in provinces and districts had mistresses or concubines. This system seems to have continued into the modern times as Chinese officials ordered government employees to get rid of their mistresses, avoid hostess bars and shun other extravagances.
The Communist Party of China, the country's political hub, with 73 million members and almost absolute authority, has launched a moral campaign to cleanse the party of such practices. The party which controls all government jobs has often been ashamed, when high officials were caught red handed of this behaviour.
The one-point programme, which has been undertaken to ensure that party officials and government executives dump their mistresses, is a step in the right direction. On an investigation, it was found that 95 per cent of the high officials are involved in corruption, apart from having one or more mistresses. It is obvious that maintaining a mistress in their limited salary is not possible. So these officials take recourse to corrupt practices.
Pornography is also on the increase. The standard of morality is going down day by day. Pornographic films, videos, books and other materials are on sale and doing brisk business. The whip is being cracked on the promoters of pornography too. It is hoped that positive results would emerge in due course of time.
