Medals tally comparison between 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games
The London 2012 Olympics is over and once again it is the US that topped the chart. Here is a London Olympics medals tally comparison with 2008 Beijing Games.

THE UNITED STATES has been one of the most dominating sporting nations in the history of Olympics so far. They normally lead the medals tally after the Games are concluded. Things look no different in the medals tally for the 2012 London Olympic Games, where they have topped the chart with 46 gold medals with an overall haul of 104 medals. China was their closest competitor with 38 gold medals. Great Britain with 29 and Russia with 24 gold were placed at third and fourth positions respectively, as per the official website.

In the past four Olympics including London Olympics, the US has been the most successful team leading the medals tally on three counts, 2000, 2004 and 2012. China topped the charts last during 2008 Olympics when the country played the host. The 2012 host nation, Great Britain, who were well supported by their home fans saw themselves winning 29 gold medals. It was an improvement of 10 gold medals, as they won only 19 gold medals during the 2008 Beijing Games. Hence, it also brings to the limelight that host nations improve their previous tally.

The US was as usual very dominant in the track and field during the London Olympics 2012 where they managed to win a total of 29 medals including 9 gold, 13 silver and 7 bronze. Russians gave a tough fight winning 8 gold medals and Jamaica with 4 gold medals were third in the track and field event. One look at the 2008 Olympic Games also draws a similar picture with the US winning 7 gold, Russia and Jamaica with 6 gold medals each. This is an Olympic sport, where the Chinese need to improve a lot. If they do so, they have a chance to replace the US at the top.

But the Chinese have been dominating other sports such as Badminton, Table Tennis, diving etc. China bagged all the gold medals that were in place for Badminton during the London Olympics. In the Beijing Games, they won 3 gold medals. The same goes for the Table Tennis performance of the Chinese team where they won all the gold medals (4), available in London and the Beijing Games. We hardly get to hear a US Table Tennis player or a Badminton player winning an Olympic medal in such sport. Hence, it shows that a country cannot be strong in all the Olympic events. Hence, one needs to master few of these events and be the best as China and the US have been often doing.

But there are other sports as well where both the nations do not dominate the sport such as Boxing, where China won three medals and the US won 2 medals compared to Britain's 5 including 3 gold in the London Olympics. Britain also reflects their dominance in the field of cycling, where they have been one of the best, as they won 8 gold medals in Beijing and 7 in London. In wrestling, it was the Russians who won 6 gold medals in 2008 Olympics and 4 in London Olympics 2012. There are some other sports too where the Chinese and the US are nowhere of being the best such as hockey, football, etc.

As far as the performance of other nations in the 2008 and the 2012 Olympic stands, there have been some improved performances overall, while some had to slide down in the medals tally. Russia who stood during third last Olympics had to satisfy themselves with a 4th place finish, winning 24 gold medals this time around. But, if they look upon their performance, it is an improvement of one gold medal as they won 23 in Beijing. It must have been a frustrating 2012 London Games for Australia, as they only won 7 gold medals in spite of having a good squad. They had won 14 gold medals during the Beijing Games.
