Media kills journalism for TRP burger
Laxity of Indian judiciary to try news channels for using excessive sensationalism to lure viewers has made them go unabatedly cynical. Alarming, certain channels can't imagine their survival without adding horror and gossip in reportage
CERTAIN HINDI news channels are becoming more of entertainment and horror channels rather than a medium of responsible journalism. They flash killer slogans before the programmes like ’Your screen will turn red’, ’Watch this programme or you will never watch it again’, ’Aaj raat aap so nahin payenge (You won’t be able to sleep tonight)’, ’Aaj aap ghar se mat nikelne (Don’t step out of your house)’, ’Aapke ghar aaj shaitan aayega (Devil will visit your house tonight)’ and many more.... These wacky and sensational slogans remind me of profesional people who create horror to entertain children. These channels have altogether changed the meaning of journalism, which is a noble profession and some people (for their TRP ratings) have altogether changed its values that the word upholds.

India, with more than a billion of people, has so many issues at hand, waiting to be represented, but, rather than focussing on those issues they are putting thrust on issues that are far from reality or not of current importance.

Whenever a solar or lunar eclipse occurs, these seemingly cynical news channels start terrifying the people. When August 8 was approaching, they began predicting that this date was unlucky for the world or a natural calamity would occur on that day because it figured three times eight. I think no major calamity occurred in anywhere in the world that would threaten the earth on that very day.

On the occasion of Janamashtami, a news channel was showing the astro-chart of Lord Krishna and analysing it just like that of an ordinary man. What relevance it did held defies a sensible man’s rationale?

The profession of journalism is a serious issue and should portray issues concerning the masses as it is a dignified medium to communicate with them rather than spreading horror and leaving a bad taste in their mouth. Such hypersensitive media must stop playing with feelings of common man as he is already burdened by many issues.

.The media bashing which media anchors in broadcast media attribute it as a new found fashion has its roots in the observations made by the author. Call it sensationalism or foolhardiness, creativity in broadcasting is made to fall into these categories. The programs that need to uphold human values and reflect the evils of the society are programmed and broadcast like bollywood movies. Does a regulatory authority will be in a position to change the future? I do not think so. The media has to be responsible and deterrent needs to be exercised at the editorial desks. The people are not bothered- if I do not like a way a channel broadcasts news, I will not watch the channel. Choose the lesser evil. Voice the displeasure in every possible way- write to editorials, write in print media, write in blogs - express your views. Let the brand take its beating- then automatically the media house will see reason.
