SINCE ANCIENT times, violence has played an important role in entertainment. Plays, dramas and musicals used violence for entertaining wherein, the message conveyed was that evil is defeated by good. However, the portrayal of violence in media today is immoral and the amount of violence is increasing constantly.
Violence in media is a common phenomenon. Earlier it was the villain, who was violent and was portrayed as a bad character. However, in recent times the hero or the main character is indulged in violent acts and it is considered to be alright. The type of violence is also increasing day after day. Lot of blood shed and physical violence is observed. People enjoy shows such as wrestling where the wrestlers are beaten up thoroughly. Children also take pleasure in watching such programmes. Movies have excessive shooting with bullets injuring the people and blood oozing out of the body. It is sometimes portrayed in a manner which is humorous and people are amused rather than sad for the person getting beaten up.
This affects the community at large as media has a lot of impact on the people. It determines the attitudes, style and way of living of the public. As media is one of the main forces that influence the people, violence in media has led to change in their attitudes. Children spend their time watching wrestling, and movies with lot of killing and violence. Children become immune to such violence and develop the attitude that it is fine to do such acts. Some of the people get so attached to the characters on television that they take it personally when something happens to them in the serial.
As media influences a large portion on the people, it is necessary that the right attitudes are portrayed in the media. It is the responsibility of the media to restrict the amount of violence shown. Media has to be sensitive to the emotions of the people and remember that there is a large audience viewing the show which includes small children. Even though violence and fighting may appeal to the people, it is not morally right to depict the same. The media should realise that it is a powerful tool in shaping the attitudes of the people and it has the responsibility of conveying good values to them.
