Millions of people fall sick in India. The medical industry caters to these people - yet prescriptions are still carried in hand while buying medicines. They should be computerised for convenience..
IN VIEW of much advanced computer know-how amongst masses, Medical Council of India should take steps so that medical practitioners may start issuing prescriptions direct from the computer after storing patients’ medical history in their computers.
Many medical practitioners especially in lower-income localities give their own-prepared medicinal syrups and powder-capsules without letting patients know about the medicines being administered to them. In emergency-era of 1975-1977, such unhealthy practice was effectively checked by making all medical practitioners to compulsorily maintain record of each patient visiting them and also binding every medical practitioner to compulsorily give a copy of prescription of administered or prescribed medicines even though given by the medical practitioner himself/herself. Such medical discipline should be restored in larger public interest.
Likewise, medical-laboratories should assign a customer-number to each person going there for medical tests. Computerised data of all regular customers would then be readily available even for past medical history. Such a system will add to their regular clientele as well.
It is essential for two reasons:one for the chemists to understand the writting of the Doctor; secondly for the patient to remember as to how many times and as to how it should be taken etc., The prescription format should be chnaged to Drug, the potency, how many times and at what times and as to how it has be be taken like with water or some other conveyance, with warnings if any and what should be done in such an emergency as first aid etc., The description of the patient, his health condition; age, risks involved; along with his / her signature. The chemist should follow mandatorily to write the number batch expiry date etc., of the medicine and as to how much quantitiy has been issued to patient, the bill number etc., which checks the across the counter sales of the medicines, without prescription, the chemist himself adorning the Doctor's character too.The Doctors also will then think of the ramifications of each drug cross interactions etc., for fear of reprimand, in case of irresponsible prescriptions,as a matter of fact, least realising the interacton of drugs though they are expected to be doubly sure about it as per their learning.
