Meghalaya guv resigns after complaints of turning Governor's House into a "young ladies club"
Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan has resigned days after allegations of sexual harassment were raised against him along with allegations of turning the Governor's House into a "young ladies club".

98 members of the Governor's staff has written a five-page letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and alleged that Shanmuganathan had "compromised the dignity" of the Governor's House and turned it into a "young ladies club".

The letter signed by the staff of the Governor's House in Shillong had gone viral on social media as well.

"We feel he is demeaning the position of the Head of the State. He is rude, arrogant, temperamental and untruthful. Above all, he has seriously compromised the dignity of the Raj Bhavan and unfortunately made it into a Young Ladies Club," the letter said.

The letter also accuses the Governor of sexual misconduct and "torture and humiliation" of officers and staff. It also accuses him of hiring or posting only women in his staff and turning the Raj Bhavan into a place where "young ladies come and go at will with direct orders from the Governor."
The Governor has however denied the allegations.

"From the time he has taken over, employees are going through severe humiliation, mental stress and torture. His activities hurt the decorum and prestige of the Raj Bhavan as well as the sentiments of the Raj Bhavan employees who are very much attached to the Raj Bhavan, it becomes our concern. From the time he has taken over, the employees are going through severe humiliation, mental stress and torture," the letter stated.

Recently, the Governor was also accused of sexually harassing a woman who had gone to him for the post of Public Relations Officer.

Shanmughanathan was appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya in 2015 by the central government.

Shillong also witnessed protests by civil society groups yesterday on Republic Day. The protesters demanded that the Governor should step down and that an impartial probe should be conducted into the allegations of sexual harassment against Shanmughanathan.
