Mehndi body art and make-up business in Jaipur picks up ahead of Karva Chauth
The week before Karva Chauth which is being celebrated today, the mehandi and make-up joints in various localities of Jaipur as well as in and around various malls, the mehandi arists had a roaring business.

According to various artists, women in hoards crowd at our regular and make-shift work places to get their hands and feet decorated with the designs of their choice. A day before the the festival, which has been taken over completely by the market forces, women pay from Rs. 500 to to Rs. 5000 for getting the body art done with henna at grooming saloons to please their husbands and lovers.

Pre-Karva Chauth parties and bashes were sponsored and held in various clubs and hotels by engaging event managers. Even competitions were  held to select best dressed and mehndi-decorated women.

There exist various women club floated by jewellery businessmen in which the jewellery for the occasion is displayed and sold. Very many rich women of Jaipur come to such events to enjoy the 'Pre-Karva Chauth Bash'. These events find the place on page three of the newspapers too.

Mehndi is an old body art of India with decorative designs made a person's hands and feet using the paste of leaves of the henna. Haldi ritual of staining oneself with turmeric paste as well as decorating the body with mehndi design earlier were simple and consisted figures of the Sun symbolising inner light.

The migrant labour women in Jaipur are also getting their palms decorating with the sun designs costing 20 to 50 rupees with mehndi cones. However, these designs consist of circles, dots and dashes.

In the modern age, dominated by market and business, there are short term training courses in mehndi body art and collection of mehndi designs are available in the print and electronic media.
