CONTROVERSIAL TALK show host and legal commentator Nancy Grace, has hit the headlines for allegations that her interview has been the reason for the death of Melinda Duckett, who killed herself after a few days of being interviewed by Nancy.
Nancy had interviewed Duckett in 2006 as a part of the ongoing nightly coverage of her sone Trenton Duckett’s kidnapping, After a couple of weeks, Nancy recorded an abrasive phone interview with Duckett for her show. The full transcript of the interview is also available on the net.
The interview started quite well with Nancy going over the basics of the case with Melinda and the boy’s father, Josh Duckett, who was to get separated from Melinda.
The case was highlighted when an Amber Alert was issued after Melinda realized that the boy was missing. She told police that someone had entered her home and kidnapped him. But very soon, she was the prime suspect after investigations started and Grace took advantage of it.
Melinda Duckett had refused to take the polygraph test, whereas the boy’s father had taken it twice and passed it both the times. In the interview, Grace asked her questions on the polygraph test which she tried to ignore and kept giving vague answers. But Nancy kept on asking her again and again.
The next day, when the segment was scheduled to air, Melinda Duckett committed suicide, with the prerecorded interview still being aired. Nancy is now in the middle of the controversy of a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Duckett’s family.
The case was going on for years, but recently a Harvard professor of psychiatry said that Grace’s hostile interviewing strategy and style leads to unanticipated public humiliation and the extent was so severe that it contributed to the cause of Melinda’s suicide.
