Mengmawi! Beautiful eyes of Northeast
When speak about hills, when speak about a romantic honeymoon, when we speak about lungs of India, when speak about music, when speak about style and attire sense, when speak about native culture, when speak about literary, when speak about matrilineal tradition, when speak about woman power, we look high up '8,586 m. where stands Kanchanjanga, India's pride.

We glorify the Eight siblings of Hill and Culture. But the next moment we segregate the 8 states, With humiliation, rebuke, discrimination, eve-tease, bully and murder. How can we be so drastic, insane and ignorant to make our Indians feel like foreigners.

My home town Krishnagar is 495km from Siliguri. The Siliguri Corridor in West Bengal, connects the North Eastern region with East India.

When winter rolls down, the chill breeze of Northeast flows over our bosom. Only we miss is the freezing snow.

The seven sisters and the little brother makes them all. Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Assam and Sikkim.

What makes them different and perfect than all is their unique diverse cultures. The unexplored paradise of India is well known for its distinct culture and traditional lifestyle. North east region offers a mixed culture of Hindu, Christianity, Muslim and Buddhism, it's a mixture of Tibetan, Southeast Asia, East Indian cultures.

Yet when students from North East come to metros in Delhi (capital), Bangalore Kolkata and Mumbai, they are disrespected and face aggressive behavior, ragging, girls are to be felt legally available in an easy way. They have reported harassment and unfair discrimination on a daily basis.

Recent survey says, while 23% of respondents said they have been harassed by landlords, total of 26% reported heckling and molestation. They are doomed with little trust in police as 80% of those who were teased or harassed did not approach them. 42% said they faced verbal abuse. But those who did, didn't have a good experience.

Personally, I would like to share an incident. During my college I had huge friends from Hills, and to confess I had the most beautiful experience to have such pure souls. To one of my Mizo companion, I asked, "Are you not interested in night parties? She humbly replied, "our state is very small and we do not have discos there, our society is very conservative." Then how do people think North East girls are easily approachable.

Official language ratio of India is 23, whereas northeast alone has nearly 220 languages of her own and equal number of ethnic groups than makes her unique and diverse from other parts of India. The sarcastic part is when they speak before us, we don't leave any chance to mock and segregate there presence.

The Khasi, Garo and Jaintia are the people with very rich in culture, traditions, religious beliefs, music, dance and arts. The hill station is predominantly inhabited by tribal people, few major tribes are Bishnupriya Manipuri, Tripuri, Adivasi, Assamese, Bhutia, Bodo, Garo, Khasi, Mizo, Naga,Tamang and Tripuri.

Now, we degrade them as tribes. Who are tribes? They are our natives, they made kinship possible, kinship created leaders, leaders gave birth to ruler, authority and law. The trio gave formation to government, and today it's we the commoners who discriminate them easily, unknown about their worth and value.

Music is the essence of Northeast. Shillong is the Rock Capital of India. India got to experience a topnotch international rock performance that the well-informed rock music buffs would anonymously associate with the hilly town, something most of us should really ponder before applause to any Indian rock guitarist.

Nagaland ensembles the World's largest Rock Guitarist performance with 368 participants on Jan, 12 ,2013 and created the Guinness world  record, with an aim to promote the brotherhood. And so easily you signature them as uncultured just because there hair style-dressing sense differs and more smarter than ours.

And when we speak about Women Empowerment it will be meaningless if we miss out the Matrilineal Society of Northeast.

As in the tradition of the Khasi people, property and wealth are passed from the mother to the youngest of her daughters, who also keeps the mother's surname. Which we seriously don't get to witness in the rest of India except North East. They are really unaware about the fact dowry as it's not practiced out there. In the state capital Shillong, women wear skirts to church, put on lipstick and drive their cars with their windows open, listening to music. Many are happy to stay single. In a country where the pressure to get married is everywhere, they are an exception.

The Literacy level of India is highest in Tripura and Mizoram. And when we speak about equality of genders, it's needed to be mentioned, how much the Khasis favour women should be witnessed if we take a trip to the labour ward. If it's a girl, the cheers from the family outside is louder. And if it's a boy, you might hear them mutter in low that, 'Whatever God gives us is quite all right." They are completely unaware of infanticide that the rest of India worship.

Most of whom I personally know belong to Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and are ambitious and careeristic. All are with respectable jobs, earn their living, fulfill their responsibilities towards families without being dependent on husband and being a suppressed housewife if it's not their choice.

But, when they move out from their native place for education or employment to other states just like any other youth of different state, however they are provided with the most unfriendly situations and environment. People say easily, "They are always in groups". Yes, because people like us do not allow them to mingle comfortably. They feel insecure.

Prejudice is quite a polite word to be used but they face the racist slur in every move, stop calling them "Chinkis" not because you are scared to be imprisoned for 5 years but because they are humble enough to compromise with silly names you give. They never give us any name, one of my northeast companion, complimented me ,'You have beautiful big eyes". She could well define it as protruding but no, she praised me and that makes the difference.

Only if you did know those small round eyes did wonders in history. The Northeast is the only part of India which the Mughals could not occupy during their reign. The Ahom Dynasty of Northeast is the longest unbroken dynasty in India's entire history. The dynasty ruled much of Northeast for 600 years. The Assam Rifles is India's largest and oldest paramilitary force while the Indian Army's Assam Regiment recruits exclusively from the seven Northeastern States.

Sometimes look through their literature. Mrityunjaya by Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya, was the first recipient of the Jnanpith from Assam in 1979.

Boro Saheb Ongbi Sanatombi by M.K. Binodini Devi, is written in Manipuri, has won the Sahitya Akademi award in 1979. The author has also won the Padma Bhushan in 1976. She was a member of Manipur's Royal family. The book is based on Manipur's King and his interactions with the British. The book turned the coin of history, focused on women and their 'normal' for royalty and otherwise.

When India campaigns for Swach Bharat, Mawlynnong a village in the East Khasi Hills district of the Meghalaya state, India, is famous for its cleanliness. Mawlynnong was awarded the prestigious declaration of 'Cleanest Village in Asia' in 2003 by Discover India Magazine. The waste is collected in the dustbins made of bamboo, directed to a pit and then used as manure.

A community initiative mandates that all residents should participate in cleaning up the village. Smoking and use of polythene is banned while rainwater harvesting is encouraged and the cleanest in India in 2005. The Northeast India has been identified as one of the world's seven richest biodiversity areas by Myers 2000.

When India celebrates its diverse cultures, it's magnificent to see the vibrant cultures and festivals of Northeast with each unique beauty. Bihu, Brahmaputra Festival of Assam, Hornbill and Sekrenyi festival of Nagaland, Torgya Monastery Festival Arunachal Pradesh, Shillong Autumn Festival, Chapchar Kut from Manipur, Ningol Chakouba Festival Manipur and Kharchi Puja from Tripura, are the major spectacular festivals that captures the presence of many foreign visitors.

These were the little bit of exploration of NorthEast India. But lot more to know about them in person. Their serene nature, their perfection and dedication towards work, their soft and caring heart, their commitment towards responsibilities, their ambition to reach a definite goal, their motive of unconditional help and share.

Is there any meaning to tease and wreck a person to an extent of death. Beat and rag someone to satisfy racism and the next vacation you plan for a NorthEast hill station or just in a week you satisfy your appetite with momos, thats hypocritical.

I see a real serene beauty in those small eyes covered with black kajal, thick long hair that completes their femininity, the fit body they usually possess shows how swift and active they are. In every prospect I got the best NorthEast neighbor. Before criticizing one try to explore the qualities they possess and we probably lack.

"My youth carved my beauty when you westernized me,

Late hour studies went perfect, cause you served me food,

My depression was comforted because you were my family.

But when you were insulted, humiliated and scorned by them

I was far away , couldn't keep my promises, behaved like any other."

"Sngewbha".

She is pure, she is ordinary like you and me,

Don't categorize her as easily accessible.

He is young and swirl with trends,

Don't rebuke his youth with humiliation.

They are Indians, do not create another nation within a nation.
