Men's Hockey team will qualify, women's team may not, says IHF General Sec
Both the men's and the women's hockey team will play their finals of the ongoing Olympic qualifiers. The men's will play against France, while the women's will take on South Africa. Merinews.com spoke to IHF General Sec, Ashok Mathur about both the teams' chances.

“I AM sure that the Indian men’s hockey team will qualify for London Olympics, but not sure about the women’s team qualification," says Ashok Mathur, General Secretary for Indian Hockey Federation. Both the men’s and the women's hockey team have reached the finals of the Olympic qualifiers, and will play France and South Africa respectively to secure a berth for London Olympics. The men's team will play their match on Sunday while the women's team are scheduled to play their match on Staurday, February 25 at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

All eyes are on the Indian men’s hockey team, which has played well in the competition so far and looks in good shape to defeat France, whom they have defeated in the round robin matches. They have not lost any match so far, and will be determined to keep their track record clean by qualifying for the Olympics. Mathur says, “India depends on penalty conversion, so Sandeep Singh would be playing an important role during the match tomorrow”. He is one of the best drag flickers for India and has proved his quality in the competition by scoring many goals.

In the women’s section, India has a tough game against the South Africans. Though, they are going to receive huge support from local supporters, the Indians need to play out of their skin to defeat them, which would not be an easy task, but not impossible. Mathur is pessimistic about their team for the match and says, “They should do well in the coming 3-4 years,” and called the women’s hockey team a ‘developing team’.

If the men’s team qualify for the finals, it could provide a great boost to the players. They need to improve upon their game, if they are to perform well against the top teams at the Olympics. Teams such as Australia, Holland look far superior to the Indian team. Mathur does not have high hopes from the Indian team, if they qualify for the mega event at London. Mathur says, “The boys are missing their chances in front of goal. It is one of the biggest problems”. The same was witnessed when India last played France in the ongoing tournament. They cannot afford to commit the same mistakes again; else France may upset India and shatter their dreams of playing in the Olympics.
