Messi scores 86 goals in a calendar year; breaks 40-year-old goal record
Considered one of the the world's best footballers, Lionel Messi made another landmark achievement in his career by scoring 86th goal in a calendar year, beating the 40-year-old record of 85 goals set by German legend Gerd Muller.

BEFORE BARCELONA'S La Liga game against Real Betis, Lionel Messi was two hits short of breaking Gerd Mueller's long standing record of scoring 85 goals in a calendar year. He needed a brace to stay on top of that list of players. He exactly did the same thing within the first 25 minutes of the game.

The Barcelona star, who has broken the 40-year-old long standing record set by Gerd Muller in 1972 has been instrumental in the results that have been produced by Barcelona this season, where they have qualified for the knock out stages of the Champions League as well as staying at the top of the La Liga standings – six points clear of Atletico Madrid.

Messi has been performing very consistently for Barcelona ever since he started to play for the club in 2005-2006 season. The Argentinean player's goal scoring record has always been impressive. But one also has to give credit to the number of quality players around him who make things happen for him. Players such as Xavi, Busquets, Fabregas and Iniesta are just few names that crop up among a list of many, who have equally played an important part in helping him find the back of the net.

But, take nothing away from Lionel Messi, who has taken the world by storm and has won a number of matches for Barcelona single-handedly. He is one of the most skilled players on the earth. When the ball is at his feet, he makes life difficult for defenders; ask Spanish team playing in the La Liga for the tough time he gives to defenders, irrespective of being with or without the ball.

He is an excellent dribbler of the ball and his touches are as smooth as silk and seems to caress the ball in the back of the net with ease. The way he cuts the ball from left to his right and vice versa makes him an impossible player to defend. He makes the game look so easy and simple, but it is only he who can make the game look simple, elegant and sexy. With the ball on his feet, it seems he is controlling the game with a magic wand.

Along with this record breaking feat, he is Barcelona's all time top scorer in all club competitions. He has won a number of personal awards such as Ballon d'Or, FIFA World player of the year and UEFA Best player in Europe award, just to name a few.
