Metabolism: A few tips to boost it
Our metabolic rate is the rate and efficiency with which our body performs various functions and burns up calories while performing those tasks. Another term that is used is basal metabolic rate or resting metabolic rate.
METABOLISM IS defined as the process whereby the body converts food into energy or uses it for bodily repairs or stores it as fat for future use. This definition is more from the viewpoint of diet and weight loss. In simple terms, if we have a faster metabolism (like the rural people) we burn calories more efficiently and store less fat. Our metabolic rate is the rate and efficiency with which our body performs various functions and burns up calories while performing those tasks. Another term that is used is basal metabolic rate or resting metabolic rate. It is the number of calories we require to burn in order to fuel essential bodily processes and keep our organs and tissues in working order. This accounts for about 60 per cent of all calories consumed. The heavier the person, the more calories he or she needs to fuel these essential processes. All other calories are used to meet our additional energy needs based on our level of physical activity.

There are many things that determine our metabolic rate, including genes. As we grow in age, our calorie needs decrease. On an average it drops two per cent every 10 years. Our muscle –to-fat-ratio- muscle cells are about eight times more metabolically demanding than fat cells. So, the greater our proportion of muscle to fat, the more faster our metabolic rate.

Metabolic rate increases during digestion of food, a process known as ‘thermal effect of food. If we go too long without food (five hours for men; three hours for women), our body thinks there is a food shortage and our metabolism tends to slow down. Our overall health also affects our metabolic rate. For this , our body needs a constant supply of nutrients (like vitamins and minerals- vitamins B2,B3, B5, B6 and C), without which metabolism can become inefficient and sluggish.

In fact, our body system is like the cosmos. The various organs within the body should be away from each other. In case they come closer, it is very risky for the person’s health. Apart from burning our calories, we must eat little, but take something in between our meals. In fact, health is wealth.
