MHRD organises events to mark Guru Purnima
On the the occasion of Guru Purnima, July 16, an event Guru Purnima at Parliament House is being organized by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to felicitate the MPs with academic background.

Also, the MHRD has launched a campaign asking for clicking selfies with teachers and upload pictures on social media platforms with hashtag SelfiewithGuru

Observed on the full moon day of Ashadha of the Hindu calendar, Guru Purnima is a festival dedicated to honour teachers and spiritual leaders among the Hindus, Jains and Buddhists and express gratitude for their guidance through their knowledge and wisdom.

Buddhists celebrate Guru Purnima in honour of Lord Buddha and mark his first sermon after enlightenment and arrival at Sarnath on the full moon day of  Ashadha.

Hindus celebrate Guru Purnima as the birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa, to honour Lord Shiva became as Adi Guru when his seven disciples known as the 'Saptarishis' took the spreading spiritual knowledge and wisdom across the world to awaken people about the purpose of human life. Many Hindus organise  the Satya Narayan Katha and Vrata for blessings of Lord Vishnu.

In Jainism, their Chaturmaas period of piety begins and it is widely believed that on Ashadha purnima. last Tirthankara Mahavira ordained Gautama Swami of Gandhara as his first discipline.
