THE PROBLEM of obesity faced by many children in the USA, has always been of prime importance to American first lady Michelle Obama. She has now taken an initiative to fight against obesity especially among children, in an initiative called “Let’s Move”.
The Let's Move intiative has four main goals - getting children more active, improving access to food, increasing number of healthy schools and empowering consumers.
President Barack Obama, in this regard, has signed an executive order launching a 90 day plan to amalgamate the efforts of federal agencies and private sector firms in fight against obesity on Tuesday morning.
A few top food manufacturing companies such as Kraft and Sara Lee have joined 38 others in signing an open letter to the first lady to support her initiative. In that open letter they wrote, “Too many of our children are seriously overweight, and our companies stand ready to work with you to address this health crisis.”
It also stated that that companies “have changed the way we develop and market more than 10,000 products, reducing fats, trans fat, sugar, salt and calories without sacrificing the convenience and taste consumers demand.”
As obesity is a major cause of diabetes type 2, the American Diabetes Association is grateful to Michelle Obama for her fight against obesity.
