Software major Microsoft is close to buying Skype if US media reports are to be believed. Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer is said to be the driving force behind the deal, being valued at 7 billion dollars if it goes through.
IN WHAT could be termed as a major acquisition, software major Microsoft is close to buying Skype Technologies SA for a whopping amount of more than 7 billion dollars. US media reports said that this deal was in the making and could be announced today, but it also had the potential to fall through as none of the companies were willing to comment on the acquisition.
If the deals goes through then it would be one of the largest acquisitions by Microsoft since its inception. Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer is said to be driving this acquisition as he feels the future of Information Technology as a business would be greatly influenced by Internet.
Skype is an online service that connects about 600 millions users worldwide through internet telephony, messaging and video services. Skype was found in 2003 by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, who are also behind the behind the file sharing technology called Kaza.
Skype was purchased by EBay in 2005 but it sold the company in 2007 at a loss of around a billion dollars. However the present owners, who comprise a group of technology owners will profit from their investment if the deals go through and Microsoft buys the firm.
