Miffed over not being given ministerial berth MLA's supporters call for bandh in Assam
In a bizarre development, supporters of an MLA in Assam called a stir against latest expansion of the Sarbanada Sonowal-led council of ministers.

Seven new ministers took oath of office on Thursday creating dissatisfaction among some other MLAs from the BJP and its coalition partners. While Prashanta Phukan, a three-time BJP MLA from the Dibrugarh constituency, resigned from the post of a government body, the sole BJP MLA from religious minority Aminul Haq Laskar quit membership of the state Haj Committee on Thursday.

Dispur BJP MLA Atul Bora has, reportedly, also openly vented anger over the expansion. But the supporters of Ramakanta Deuri, MLA of BJP's coalition partner, today called a 12 hour-long middle Assam bandh creating anger across the state. Earlier Deuri served as chief executive member of the Tiwa Autonomous Council.

During the stir, some bandh supporters tried to stop movement of vehicles on NH 37 in Morigaon which connects upper Assam with Guwahati, the capital city of the state.

The latest expansion of the Sonowal cabinet took place nearly two years after the BJP-led front formed government at the state. The new council of ministers includes two MLAs from AGP and BPF each, the two allies of the BJP in the state apart from its five MLAs.

That has apparently angered other three allies of the front which have not seen any representation in the council of ministers. However, the state BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass has denied any dissatisfaction among the party MLAs over the expansion. Among the seven newly inducted ministers five have received cabinet portfolio.
