Migration is a powerful driver of economic growth, dynamism and understanding: UN Chief on International Migrants Day
International Migrants Day, 18 December, was observed by the UN Agencies and human rights group with the theme 'Migration with Dignity' across the globe urging the world community 'to reaffirm the importance of the international protection regime and represents a commitment by Member States to strengthen and enhance mechanisms to protect people on the move'. The observance was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2016.

In his message on the observance, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his message stated, "Migration is a powerful driver of economic growth, dynamism and understanding. It allows millions of people to seek new opportunities, benefiting communities of origin and destination alike."

It has been urged that treating every migrant with dignity was one of fundamental requirements and the migrants should be allowed to choose participation over isolation.

According to the UN, throughout human history, migration has been a courageous expression of the individual's will to overcome adversity and to live a better life. "Today, globalization, together with advances in communications and transportation, has greatly increased the number of people who have the desire and the capacity to move to other places," adds the UN on its website.

The UN suggests that there was a need to dignify migration choices by paying migrants due respect and make migration safe, regular and dignified for all.

"This new era has created challenges and opportunities for societies throughout the world. It also has served to underscore the clear linkage between migration and development, as well as the opportunities it provides for co-development, that is, the concerted improvement of economic and social conditions at both origin and destination," holds the UN.
