THE CONDITION of the city of Guwahati, the gateway to the Northeastern India, which is maintained by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is appallingly pitiable.
Due to illegal encroachment of the hills surrounding the city, the top soil comes down due to erosion during the rains chokes the drains. What the authorities have done is clean the drains but, they have left the soil there only s and as soon as the next shower comes the mud is back to clog the drains. This has made life miserable for the people as even during a small shower the water gets into the houses due to blocked drains, thereby causing damage of property and threat to lives of the citizens. The condition is now so pathetic that in certain areas in Guwahati such as Anil Nagar, boats are being used by the residents ever after a shower of 2-3 hours.
The authorities have completely turned a blind eye to the suffering of the common man.
