Mild shower exposes civic inadequacies in Allahabad
A mild shower that we experienced in the city on Friday, 31 May 2013, did bring relief to the people. Cool breeze started blowing to bring down the temperature. And the fans too were emitting pleasant wind all around. But the disruption in power supply landed the citizens in trouble once again.

Power supply was apparently switched off as a precaution-or a veiled cut in the garb of precaution! But fortunately the lashing winds did not last for long. However, the mild rain exposed the poor state of cleanliness in some areas where water-logging appeared instantly, the reason being that the drains of those areas were clogged and movement of water was nil.

Water-logging weakens the surface of the roads, especially if they are made of sub-standard stuff, as seemed to be so in the case of new Allahabad roads, especially those made during the Maha Kumbh because, as the story of allegations goes, they were subjected to Maha fraud too as huge funds sanctioned for the purpose could be subjected to leakage. But we will come to that later.

What we must say right now is that even such roads may survive for some more months if they are spared of the avoidable water- logging caused mainly by the clogged drains of those areas. There are reports about drain blockage from several areas. Weren'?t these drains cleaned and flushed out of the clogged stuff even during the Mahakumbh? If not, when will they be attended to?

Will we have to wait for another 12 years for the Kumbh or another 144 years for the next Mahakumbh! I would like to alert the Health authorities to make instant survey of the areas that would be most vulnerable to water-logging due to blocked drains and start taking immediate remedial steps so that when the monsoon finally sets in with all its thunder and fury, we are not caught napping.
