The old, original, ever beautiful song 'Mile Sur Mera Tumhara' was replete with the spirit of unity in diversity. The new version 'Phir mile sur' seems to have missed out on the message altogether. It comes across as a Bollywood fashion parade.
ON REPUBLIC day I first saw ‘Phir Mile Sur,’ the new version of ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara.’ My gut reaction was "Old is Gold" because unfortunately it does not live up to the original.
Though it is not fair to compare, the new version may consist of a lot many great people but the old spirit was missing.
In the newer version more focus has been given on celebrity selection rather than recreating faithfully a spiritual & patriotic song. Some of my friends & family members were shocked at the video of ‘Phir Mile Sur’. They were shooting unstoppable questions like, “why does Deepika have her legs bare?” “What is Salman doing there with his body bare? “Is it a national integration song or a fashion parade? “Why are Sachin and Dr. APJ Kalam missing? “Why are Sania Mirza, Vishwanathan Anand, Leander Paes and Rajyavardhan Rathore missing? The questions kept flowing.
The true jewels of India like vocalists Bhimsen Joshi and Balamurali Krishna, sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, tabla maestros Allah Rakha and Zakir Hussain and sportsmen Narendra Hirwani and Prakash Padukone featured in the original. Well-known film personalities like Amitabh Bachchan, Lata Mangeshkar, Mithun Chakraborty, Jeetendra, Hema Malini, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Kamal Haasan, Sharmila Tagore, Tanuja and Waheeda Rehman too appeared in the national integration song. I once again saw the complete video of ‘Mile sur mere tumhara’ on you tube. I have to say that the original video made way back in 1988 was much better. ’Phir Mile Sur’ is not the song of India; rather we can call it a song of Bollywood. It should have been released on Filmfare or Screen Awards rather than on Republic day. In my personal opinion, ‘Phir Mile Sur’ concentrates more on Bollywood celebrities than anything else. Of course Amitabh Bachchan deserves his place in the new version, but what about actors like Abhishek Bachchan, Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika & so many irrelevant personalities who have been cast. The producers Arti and Kailash Surendranath would have done a better job by casting National heroes, scientists, entrepreneurs, army men, sportsmen, or even ordinary but powerful common people of our country. India is much more than movies. The old, original, everlasting song ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ made us want the song to never finish whereas the new version ‘Phir Mile Sur’ makes us desperate for it to get over. Was a remake needed in the first place? I don’t think so. ‘Phir Mile Sur’ doesn't depict unity in diversity. It comes across as a Bollywood celebrity parade. Little harsh but true, this new version ‘Phir Mile Sur’ is like Ram Gopal Verma’s ‘Aag,’ the remake of ‘Sholay.’ Arti and Kailash Surendranath should remember that if they try to recreate iconic works of art without cluing into what it actually means the result is as disappointing as this one is. It is very unfortunate that even patriotism is used for marketing. We are forced to idealise the Bollywood stars. Our nation comprises of hard working scientists, smart entrepreneurs, sporting legends & visionary leaders. It’s high time we revel in what is truly worthy about our nation.
.This new mile sur mera tumhara is nothing but wastage of money in killing of culture and truth. Showing the beauty in prosperity is easy than to show in reality and integate it
.History repeated itself once again.. saying old is gold... Old "MILE SUR MERA TUMHARA" is really a superb song to listen & its lyrics is one of the best in our INDIAN HISTROY. I hope it will be so 4ever.
.yes, I think old was better then the new one. I was expecting different personality from different background. If u see most video only showing mumbai only.Video should include all states view to give a feel of INDIA.New song makers only concentrated on recent people or u can say wish people they know only.Didn't researched before they made it.They should create it again doing there homework...

.i havent heard the older one(shame on me) but what my father told me that this new version is not containing any feeling of patriotism and oneness in nation. right y deepika is not there in any traditional indian apparel. one more thing thatmy father said that older original one had "sindhi" lyrics in them "why not new one???"

.Very well said! I have the same views in totality just that you missed Aishwarya Rai who is again unwanted all together. The essence is to tap the real india...not reel india..Sonu Nigam who could have given the best classical touch totally disappointed by adding pop and western touch...though I completely appreciate the idea of a remake for miley sur...but the sur is missing all together...its just an album of latest people trying to ape sm1 or the other..its not original !
