THE LATEST from the missing Apple iPhone 4G prototype case, has turned this saga into a crime thriller. Gizmodo, the technology blog which wrote an exclusive on an Apple unreleased prototype that had been discovered in bar, now says that authorities seized the computers from the home of the staff writer who wrote the story.
Gawler Media, which owns Gizmodo, a technlogy blog stated,"Last Friday night, California’s Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team entered editor Jason Chen’s home without him present, seizing four computers and two servers."
In fact, Gawkin CEO has even asked that the police return the computers, citing that they are newsroom equipment. “Under both state and federal law, a search warrant may not be validly issued to confiscate the property of a journalist. We expect the immediate return of the materials you confiscated from Mr. Chen.”
This in fact has raised a debate over whether bloggers should be considered akin to journalists who work in traditional news outlets. The law cited does cover online journalists but not bloggers.
Chen had reported the seizure of his computers in a letter posted on the website, also including the search warrant on which basis the computers had been seized.
The Californian investigative unit dealing with the case, is considering whether it is a matter of theft of the prototype.
